Empowerment Evaluation in Thailand (Mahasarakham University).
Dr. Fetterman was invited to present the keynote address at the 5th International Conference on Educational Reform 2012, in Pattaya, Thailand (March 22-23, 2012). The theme of the conference was: Empowering Education, Empowering People, Empowering the World. The conference theme was based the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the General Assembly of the United Nations, proclaiming that all people have the right to education and that elementary education be compulsory and Free (UN, 1948). However, the conference focused on a world in transition and issues associated with a 21st century education.
Dr. Fetterman’s keynote was titled: Empowerment Evaluation and Educational
Reform: Building Capacity by
Helping People Help Themselves.
The conference was hosted by the Faculty of Education, Mahasarakham
University, Thailand.
Welcoming speeches were made by Assoc. Prof. Dr Prawit
Erawan, Dean of the Faculty of Education, Mahasarakham University, Thailand;
Assoc. Prof. Phoumy Douang Chanh, Dean of Faculty of Education, National
University of Laos; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tham, Rector of College of
Education, Hue University, Vietnam.
Facebook was alive and well during the conference. There were over 30 postings about the
keynote alone before it was even concluded. The entire conference was documented on Facebook pages,
blogs, and web pages, significantly adding to the highly interactive nature of
the conference.
Dr. Fetterman was also invited to conduct a 2-day
empowerment evaluation training workshop at Mahasarakham University.
One day before the workshop, Dr.
Fetterman got acquainted with Mhasarakham doctoral students including a visit
to Le Parc Historique De Phimai and neighboring temples, orchestrated by
Atchara Meenasantirak.
The workshop was engaging and had immediate application to
participant programs. The use of
ratings, engaging in dialogue, and developing plans for the future were
instructive. Self- and group
critiques characterized the workshop presentations. Translation services were provide by both Professors Prasong
Saihong and Sangkom Pumipuntu.
Dr. Fetterman was also invited to meet with Supachai
Samappito, the President of Mahasarakham University. They discussed future projects and plans for further
international exchange, including faculty and students.
Professor Saihong and Dr. Fetterman also shared
technological tips of the trade, focusing on apps for Facebook, Latitude (to
track a colleague or friends travels), Translate, Dropbox (cloud storage),
Google+, Join.me (desktop sharing), TeamViewer (desktop sharing) and PDFs in
iBooks (such as articles and fliers).
The discussed the uses of these apps in evaluation while touring the
Grand Palace (including the Temple of Emerald Buddha).
